Silk is one of the finest materials, but it’s also one of the most delicate. It therefore requires extra attention in order to keep its shine.

Here are some of the best tips to make your beloved silk garment last in time.

Even though dry clean is the most established method of washing silk, frequent dry cleaning can be time consuming and can also damage the garment over time. The optimal way to clean such an item with care is to hand wash it.

The first thing you need to be aware of is that the sooner you wash it the less affected it is going to be by stains or other elements such as salt and chlorine.

Here are the 5 tips for a smooth, shiny and wrinkle free silk garment:

1-Soaking in fresh water for a few minutes is enough to rinse away the contaminants that might become long lasting stains. While doing so bear in mind that the water needs to be cold for an optimal protection of its texture.

2-Make sure to use silk detergent or Marseille soap. Adjust the amount of detergent to your load and dip your silk clothing into the bowl of soapy water. Rub any stain against the surface of the bowl for a few minutes and let it sink for an hour or two.

Note: It is highly recommended to test your detergent’s reaction by dipping a hidden seam line first to make sure that the textile is not discoloring or roughing up.

3- After washing, extra care needs to be given to the way your garment is dried. In order to avoid wrinkles, a good method is to dry it by laying it on a stretched dry towel and rolling it carefully to let the excess water be absorbed. You might need to repeat this action two or three times before you hang your clothe to air dry.

4-The best way to prevent wrinkles, is to use a steamer for a faster and more uniform drying, or to hang your silk dress in the bathroom and let it smooth up from the steam of the shower. If you still need to use an iron, make sure to use it at a low temperature setting.

5-Finally for you to enjoy it for the longest time we suggest you to store your silk garment in a fabric bag and place it on a shelves where it will not be folded too many times, to avoid folding lines.

The next time you are going to wear it, it will be as smooth and shiny as when you fist fell in love with it!
